HARRISBURG – Rep. Gary Day (R-Lehigh/Berks) today applauded key investments to preserve farmland in the Kutztown and Kempton areas of the 187th Legislative District.

“Agriculture is both a vital part of our heritage and of our future,” Day said. “Investing in the preservation of local farmland ensures these vital lands are protected and remain in use for productive farming well into the future.”

The Wyatt Jonas/ Leah Ellen Gehringer Farm of Kempton, a 37-acre crop farm, and the
Nancy A. Walbert Farm of Kutztown, a 78-acre crop farm, received aid.

The local investments were announced by the state Department of Agriculture as part of a $7.2 million investment to protect 2,569 acres on 30 farms in 18 counties. Since 1988, the farmland program has purchased permanent conservation easements on 5,979 Pennsylvania farms, covering 606,215 acres in 58 counties, ensuring they will remain farms in the future.

PA’s farmland preservation program is a partnership between the Commonwealth and our counties to keep land costs low for farmers to remain in the farming business.
