Day, Reichley Welcome Recycling Grant for Lehigh, Berks Counties and Upper Macungie Township
7/30/2010

Three recycling grants for Berks County, Lehigh County and Upper Macungie Township have been awarded, totaling $396,600 in grants from the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), according to Reps. Gary Day (R-Lehigh/Berks) and Doug Reichley (R-Berks/Lehigh).

The grants are as follows:

Upper Macungie will receive a Recycling Performance Program grant of $329,452, which is based on the township’s population and the 24,286 tons of post-consumer waste that was recycled in 2008.

Lehigh County will receive a County Recycling Coordinator Program grant of $42,060 to be used to reimburse the county for 50 percent of the cost of its recycling coordinator’s salary. The grant is in addition to funds DEP distributes to municipalities to establish and maintain recycling programs.

Berks County will receive a grant of $25,088 based on the 2,982 tons that was recycled during 2007.

“The recycling industry is important in Pennsylvania because of the jobs it creates,” said Day.  “Also, the more we recycle, the less we need to dump in landfills, which ultimately saves us all by keeping waste disposal fees low.”

“Upper Macungie is certainly one of the standout municipalities in terms of its efforts to encourage its residents to recycle post-consumer waste,” said Reichley.  “The township and its residents should be commended for their efforts to go green by recycling a high percentage of its waste.”

The County Recycling Coordinator Grant Program was established by Act 101 of 1988, the Municipal Waste Planning, Recycling and Waste Reduction Act.  It promotes economic growth and provides municipalities and counties with incentives to increase the amount of recyclable materials recovered from the waste stream.  This grant is in addition to the funds DEP allocates to municipalities to establish and maintain county and municipal recycling programs.

The Recycling Performance Grant Program provides incentives to help Pennsylvania communities increase the amount of materials recovered through recycling.
