Day Welcomes State Ag Secretary to Lehigh Valley
3/3/2017
FOGELSVILLE – Members of the agriculture community were updated on the state of their industry within state government at a special Agricultural Town Hall meeting Thursday evening at the Fogelsville Fire Hall, which also featured Secretary of Agriculture Russell Redding, said Rep. Gary Day (R-Lehigh/Berks), one of the hosts of the event.

“Having the state’s top ag official in our district was a great honor,” Day said. “With so much of the 187th District having a strong ag heritage, I felt it was important to have the secretary here to discuss the most important issues with not just farmers but those who own ag-related businesses or who are employed in the many ag-related fields.”

During the event, Day updated attendees on legislative efforts in the House to address ag-related issues, along with concerns about noxious weeds and its impact on local operations.

Redding spoke to the 35-plus attendees about the proposed state budget and its potential impact upon the Department of Agriculture and the overall status of the industry in Pennsylvania.

Redding is the former dean of the School of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences at Delaware Valley University in Bucks County. He has extensive experience as a public servant, having spent more than 20 years serving Pennsylvania in Harrisburg and Washington, D.C.

Redding is a graduate of Penn State, having earned a bachelor’s degree in agriculture education and master’s degree in agriculture and extension education. In addition, he is a graduate of the Agribusiness Executive program. A native of Pennsylvania, Redding has an innate understanding of production agriculture, stemming from his youth on his family’s dairy farm and his time as a dairy farm operator.

The event was also co-hosted by the Office of State Sen. Pat Browne (R-Lehigh), and his chief of staff, Ellen Millard-Kern, talked to the crowd about the budget proposal from the Senate’s perspective. Browne is chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee.

Day’s office also handed out informational brochures from the Department of the Agriculture on a number of important topics, including the latest updates on the spotted lantern fly.
