Day Excited to Begin New Term with Committee Assignments
HARRISBURG – Rep. Gary Day (R-Lehigh/Berks) said today that his committee assignments for the 2017-18 session will allow him to make the 187th District an even better place to live, work and raise our families. Specifically, Day was assigned to the House Insurance, Local Government, Professional Licensure, and Veterans Affairs and Emergency Preparedness committees.

“I am very excited to begin my service on two new standing committees this term – committees that have an enormous impact on the lives of our local residents,” Day said. “I am especially gratified to have been given a seat on the House Veterans Affairs and Emergency Preparedness Committee, where I can work to improve the lives of our National Guard units and veterans and help prepare our Commonwealth in terms of any type of emergency we may face.”

Additionally, Day plans to use his experience as a former executive assistant to the mayor of Allentown on the House Local Government Committee. “Local government – whether at the school district, township, borough or county level – is the closest form of government to the people, where residents have the ability to show up and interact with their elected officials, and I expect this committee will consider legislation giving local governments the ability to better respond to and address our communities’ concerns.”

The Local Government Committee reviews bills that would amend the municipal codes by which local governments operate. This could include legislation related to local government purchases, real estate assessment policies and statewide pensions for municipal police officers. Pennsylvania has more than 2,500 local government units of all sizes.

Day is a long-time member of the Insurance Committee, which handles legislation regarding general insurance company operations, including homeowners, life, health and automobile, as well as agent and broker licensing and medical malpractice insurance. Likewise, his service on the House Professional Licensure Committee -- which he was on during the 2011-12 session -- will involve aspects of licensing the 29 boards for various occupations and professions, such as those involving health care and consumer services.

“The committee level is really where the majority of lawmaking takes place, as all bills must be referred to a standing committee for study and consideration and where proposals begin to be refined into workable pieces of legislation,” Day said. “I am looking forward to continuing my role on these critical committees, and making sure that the voice, interests and opinions of the people of the 187th District are heard.”
