Day Authors Resolution to Recognize PA Cable Network
1/27/2015
HARRISBURG – As a way to honor the contributions of the Pennsylvania Cable Network (PCN) and its 20 years of gavel-to-gavel coverage of the Pennsylvania General Assembly, the state House today approved a resolution authored by Rep. Gary Day (R-Lehigh/Berks) to designate Jan. 25-31, 2015, as “PCN: Pennsylvania’s Neighborhood Week” in Pennsylvania.

“PCN plays an important role in what we do in this chamber every single time we gavel into session,” said Day, who once worked in cable television. “The non-partisan, unedited and balanced coverage ensures that Pennsylvanians have a reliable and untainted view of the legislative process, and allows citizens to become more engaged in their government.”

The Pennsylvania Cable Network has been providing educational content to its nearly 3 million viewers since 1979. In 1995, the network began gavel-to-gavel coverage of state legislative sessions, along with committee hearings, press conferences, inaugurations, bill signings and other public interest events.

In addition to its government and political coverage, PCN provides viewers with coverage of the Pennsylvania Farm Show, PIAA sports championships, factory tours, Gettysburg Battlefield walks and in-depth interviews with Pennsylvania authors, veterans and other newsmakers.

Day also applauded the network for its ability to address the ongoing investments and upgrades needed to remain technologically current to produce outstanding picture quality.

Through the years, PCN has done its best to keep up with the rapid pace of technology and maintains superior quality for its viewers. In fact, PCN kept pace with the ever-changing field of broadcasting by upgrading its services to high definition. It has embraced the digital age and social media by making content available online and interacting with viewers via Facebook and Twitter.

“It is no secret, nor is it a surprise, that PCN is nationally recognized as the premier state public affairs network and serves as a model for other states,” Day added. “Cable companies recognized a need to provide public information to Pennsylvanians and currently fund more than 85 percent of its funding, with no tax dollars used for its programming.”
