Day Seeks Candidates for Appointment to Valley Forge Military College
NEW TRIPOLI – Rep. Gary Day (R-Lehigh/Berks) is currently seeking student applicants from the 187th Legislative District to participate in this year’s Valley Forge Military College Legislative Appointment Initiative. Applicants would reside in Parkland, Northwestern Lehigh or Kutztown school districts.

“This academy provides a world-class education to students from around the country, even to students who are not interested in a military career,” Day said. “Through the state House, lawmakers like myself can appoint a committee to select a deserving young man or woman to the college through a privately funded scholarship.”

The minimum academic requirements for the scholarship are a cumulative high school GPA of 2.5 (on a 4.0 scale) and a combined verbal and math SAT score of 1,000 (or an ACT score of 20).

All scholarships will be funded by the college; state funds are not used for this program. The full amount awarded to attend the Valley Forge Military College depends upon the academic achievement of the student selected. The minimum annual award is $12,000 for a high school GPA of 2.5, rising to an annual award of $17,500 for a high school GPA of 3.75. The school will also assist in facilitating other financial options.

The college offers an Army ROTC Early-Commissioning Program as well as a transfer program to top-tier, four-year colleges and universities throughout the country.

The deadline for students to apply is Feb. 15, 2015, and applications should be submitted to Day’s office at 6299 Route 309, Northwest Centre, Suite 302, New Tripoli, PA 18066.

Day will not be directly involved in the selection process, but will be assembling a selection committee comprised of community residents to review the applications and select the most qualified candidate.

Five years ago, the Pennsylvania House recognized Valley Forge as Pennsylvania’s official military college and created a legislative appointment program for the school. Founded in 1928, Valley Forge is a co-educational, two-year transfer college located in Wayne, Delaware County.

Additional information about the initiative and applications are available by contacting Day’s district office at 610-760-7082 or his website at Materials can also be obtained from high school counselors in the district and the local Army or National Guard Recruiting Offices.
