Day Receives Committee Assignments for New Session
HARRISBURG – Rep. Gary Day (R-Lehigh/Berks) will continue to be one of the Lehigh Valley’s representatives on the powerful House Appropriations Committee during the 2013-14 legislative session.

“I am very pleased to reprise my role on the House Appropriations Committee, which plays a critical role in examining the governor’s budget proposal and overseeing the Commonwealth’s spending decisions,” Day said. “We are once again looking at another very difficult budget year, where every dollar is going to be stretched to its maximum benefit. My job on the Appropriations Committee is to ensure that the priorities in the upcoming budget reflect those of the people I represent in Berks and Lehigh counties.”

The responsibilities of the Appropriations Committee begin immediately in anticipation of the governor’s budget address on Tuesday, Feb. 5.

In addition, Day has been assigned to the Health, Insurance and Gaming Oversight committees. The latter is a new assignment for the lawmaker’s third term. The Gaming Oversight Committee helps ensure that the state’s gaming activities are operated with the highest level of integrity and that every available dollar from gaming is used for its primary purpose – property tax relief.

The Gaming Oversight Committee is one of the newer House standing committees, having been created six years ago to oversee the implementation of slot machines and table games in Pennsylvania, as well as the state’s bingo, small games of chance and amusement laws. The committee also has oversight of the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board and aspects that deal with gaming within the Department of Revenue, the Office of Attorney General and the Pennsylvania State Police.

The Insurance Committee handles legislation regarding general insurance company operations, including homeowners, life, health and automobile, as well as agent and broker licensing and medical malpractice insurance.

Likewise, his service on the House Health Committee will involve legislation regarding health insurance, and the state’s involvement with the new federal health care law, among other issues.

“I am excited about my new assignments, in addition to keeping my seats with the Health and Insurance committees,” Day said. “We face considerable challenges this session, and already we have an aggressive and active agenda ahead of us. I look forward to working with these committees in making our state a great place to live, work and raise our families.”
