Day Applauds PennDOT for Quick Bridge Work
NEW TRIPOLI – Rep. Gary Day (R-Lehigh/Berks) today applauded the work of the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) for its expediency in replacing two bridges on Route 309 in Heidelberg and North Whitehall townships.
“Route 309 carries thousands of vehicles throughout Lehigh County every day, and although the two bridge replacement projects caused delays and inconveniences for local residents, motorists and businesses, the situation could have been much worse, and I’m thankful it wasn’t,” Day said. “Through the quick work of PennDOT and its contractor, Deblin Inc., I’d like to extend my deepest congratulations and appreciation on a fine job. I am sure the residents of the 187th District also appreciate the manner in which the work was done.”
The projects entailed the rehabilitation of the two structurally deficient bridges. The deck, beams and parapets on both bridges were removed and replaced. Additional work on both bridges included repairing the bridge abutments and installing new guide rail and pavement markings.
The original completion date had been set for May 2012. More work will be done in the new year that may require sporadic lane restrictions on Route 309 at both bridge locations.
The project began in September to rehabilitate the bridge over a tributary to Mill Creek in North Whitehall Township and the bridge over Jordan Creek in Heidelberg Township. Both bridges were constructed in 1962.
