Day Issues Statement on Governor’s Changes to Abortion Clinic Inspections, Oversight

Rep. Gary Day (R-Lehigh/Berks), a member of the House Health Committee and chairman of the Subcommittee on Health Facilities, today issued a response after Gov. Tom Corbett announced several policy changes with respect to public safety involving inspections and investigations of abortion clinics in Pennsylvania.

“It’s a sad day in the history of our Commonwealth when we find that the thin legal line between abortion and murder has been so egregiously violated. This line, between a fetus and a baby, is shown starkly in this case where legal abortions gave way all too easily to infanticide. The individual operating that Philadelphia clinic, who has been charged with several crimes relating to the deaths of one woman and several near-term babies, lost grasp of that legal distinction.

“This case sheds an unfortunate light on the lack of oversight of these types of clinics in Pennsylvania and the lack of supervision and inspection that resulted in the deaths of at least one woman and several babies.

“It is my hope that we as a Commonwealth proceed to protect the ability of all to pursue their life, specifically when they are at their weakest moments. For nearly a decade, the provisions of Pennsylvania’s laws have been ignored, and I believe that with the policy changes announced Tuesday, inspections will be required and investigations will be more thoroughly completed.

“Furthermore, I appreciate Governor Corbett’s attention to this matter and support the changes he has announced to help prevent this type of tragedy in the future.”
