Day Encourages Farming Census Participation

Data to be used for decision making

Rep. Gary Day (R-Lehigh/Berks) today said that beginning in a few weeks, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) will be working with the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture to reach out to farmers throughout the Commonwealth to conduct the Agricultural Resource Management Survey (ARMS).

Day said this survey will allow local farmers in Berks and Lehigh counties the chance to offer accurate, real-time data that will be used to help shape the policies, programs and issues that impact the agriculture industry.

“If contacted, farmers should participate so that data from Pennsylvania will be included in the resulting data which will be utilized by government and industries to make decisions that impact the farming community,” Day said.

The survey will be conducted between Jan. 28 and April 14, 2011, and will include input from nearly 35,000 farmers nationwide, of which 673 will be randomly selected from Pennsylvania.  Producers will be asked to provide data on their operating expenditures, production costs and household characteristics.

In addition, the Pennsylvania field office of the NASS will be surveying cattle farmers for its largest cattle survey from Dec. 30 through Jan. 11, 2011.  Estimates will include the total number of cattle and calves as of Jan. 1, 2011, as well as the total number of heifers, steers, milk cows and beef cows.

Day emphasized that federal law mandates that the data provided must be kept confidential, and names, addresses and information about individual operations are considered private information and are therefore protected under federal law.

Results of the cattle survey will be made available on Jan. 28, 2011, and the data gathered in ARMS will be published on Aug. 2, 2011.  Both reports will be accessible by visiting the NASS website at  A link to the NASS website can also be found by logging onto Day’s website at

For questions or concerns regarding both surveys, farmers may contact NASS by calling 1-800-727-9540.
