HARRISBURG – To help encourage growth in the solar energy field and create new jobs, ATAS International Inc. has been awarded a $230,958 state grant to help with the purchase and installation of a solar roof at its facility in Upper Macungie Township, Rep. Gary Day (R-Lehigh/Berks) said today.

“I am pleased to see that state funding is being invested right here in the Lehigh Valley, and that it will continue to assist manufacturers which are large energy consumers,” Day said. “The ability for this manufacturer to use solar and less fossil fuels will enable it to be more efficient and productive, thereby being a strong job creator in our area.”

As part of the grant, ATAS International must also invest nearly $700,000 of its own funds for the project.

The grant is being used to purchase and install a 491.4 kilowatt, roof-mounted solar array. This will allow the manufacturer to offset 100 percent of its electricity consumption for its manufacturing facility and an adjoining building, in just the first year. ATAS is a leading manufacturer of metal roofing, wall cladding, ceilings, perimeter edge metal and other building accessories.

“Program guidelines require investments in these projects to create new jobs,” Day said. “And that’s part of our overall goal – to ensure that our local job creators have the resources they need to employ our residents.”

The grant is made possible through the Solar Energy Program of the Commonwealth Financing Authority, which authorized the projects today. Specifically, the program offers financial assistance in the form of loans and grants that are used by eligible applicants to promote the generation and use of solar energy and the manufacture or assembly of solar equipment in the Commonwealth. The program is administered jointly by the Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) and the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) under the direction of the Commonwealth Financing Authority (CFA).
